Getting the Juices Flowing

Holy moly, the struggle is real. When I started blogging a fellow teacher and blogger told me that when school is going on, it’s hard to keep the creative juices flowing through the classroom and blogging. She wasn’t kidding!

When i found that happening i decided to take a little break to get the creative juices going again, and now that school is more settled, i feel much more free to share my life on here!

Here’s what you missed:
1. It’s officially fall, and that makes me happy!

2. The Cubs are killing it in the playoffs!

3. You all know that i was having quad  while i trained for Chicago. Unfortunately, 5 days before the race my doctor decided the injury was too severe to run the 26.2 so I had to be sidelined. I was super disappointed, but I’m still really proud of the training cycle i had and I’m ready to kill the next one. Below is the nasty picture of my quad after my doctor took the scraper to it. Uck!

4. Until the next one, I’m stuck swimming and pool running. I get really strange looks when I’m running laps in the pool at my gym. Oh the struggle!

5. I currently am on day 2 stomach flu, which is super fun!

6. I still have Wilson. If you remember he was the golf ball that hit me while i was doing an 18 miler this cycle!

7. McDonald’s now serves breakfast all day, which was great for my long runs this cycle!

Make It Work Monday, and I Love Post-Its

It’s Monday, it’s two weeks before the marathon, and here’s how I’m making it work on this Monday!

1. One of my kiddos brought me a gift…they already know me so well!

image

2. I’m very sore from my rough and painful 15 miler yesterday, but my quad survived thanks to some tough love from my chiropractor (sorry it’s gross!)

3. One of My new favorite ways to make chicken is with a yummy, crunchy corn flakes breading..perfect for Monday night

4. My parents are in Europe…very jealous but glad they’re enjoying their trip!

5. Finley is obsessed with this new toy that my dear friend gave her…if only i could take the darn squeaker out!

To get myself to the start (and finish!) Of the marathon, I’ve been advised to only do my weekend long run this weekend and other than that avoid running. I won’t lose fitness, and i need my quad to be in the best shape possible for that 26.2! It’s hard to not run on these weekdays, but i know it’s for the best!

How are you making it work on this Monday?

My Date With a Wet-Vac and Cement

Yesterday i mentioned that i was supposed to do my 20 miler on Saturday morning, but unfortunately my house had another plan!

I got up at 5:00, tired but ready to go, and went in the basement to grab my running clothes from the dryer. This is what i found…

image

We had bad storms during the night and we had an inch of water in the basement! Did i mention Tall Guy was out of town? So with the run clearly canceled, i headed to home depot at 6:00 am to rent a wet vac.

image

I spent 4 hours vacuuming up water, and was about finished, when i looked in the corner to find that water was STILL coming in. Upon looking closer, i noticed that it was coming in where the radon pipe was and the lovely radon guys hadn’t sealed it properly! So back to Home Depot i went for some hydrolic cement…

I sealed the pipe in, crossed my fingers, and thank goodness it did the trick…no more water!

This was definitely not how i planned on spending my Saturday morning, but i was stupidly proud that i conquered a flooded basement by myself!

Today’s workout: NONE! Healing from my 20 miler yesterday!

My Confession and My Quad is Stubborn

So I have a confession to make…the last few weeks with my quad injury I’ve found it really hard to blog about running. Every time I would sit down to write, I would feel bummed out about my angry quad all over again and put the computer away. I need to get better about sharing the good and the bad, no matter how tough it is.

That being said, this week was full of ups and downs with my stubborn quad. Last Saturday I wrote about my awesome 18 miler – and it was AWESOME! Then, Monday I went out for a run, made it a mile, and was almost in tears my quad was hurting so bad. UGH! So I called in and saw my chiropractor. He recorded me running on the treadmill and then we watched it back in slow motion – we found that my left leg (the hurt one) is turning out when I run, causing my adductor muscle to pull. I’ve never had this issue before 4 weeks ago, and my awesome chiro and I realized that this problem started not long after I got new running shoes. I have used the same type of New Balance for 6 years, and just 6 weeks ago I switched to those Asics. LIGHTBULB!

He said to take the rest of the week off and try a long run today in my old shoes to see if it hurts. This morning when I headed out bright and early I was SUPER nervous – I kept thinking I was going to get a mile in again, and have to go back to the car. What ended up happening?

This is the face of one HAPPY girl after a 20 miler today, in my old shoes, with very little quad pain!
